Is your company benefiting from using FreeBSD? Do you see the value, but don’t know how to convince the business side of the benefits your company is receiving from using FreeBSD? We’ve created this sample donation letter to help get you started.

The following letter/email can be tailored to your company to make it easier to ask for financial support for the FreeBSD Foundation. It is only an example, and should be modified to fit the company you work for.

For the last several years, we have given an annual donation to the FreeBSD Foundation (http://freebsdfoundation.org) about this time of year. This is a request for another such donation.

or

The FreeBSD Foundation is a charitable organization, registered as a 501c3 in the United States, which provides support for the FreeBSD Project, whose software we use in our product.

There are a number of reasons that we should donate:

  • [OUR PRODUCT(S)] is(are) based on FreeBSD, and we rely on the FreeBSD community for ongoing support including security advisories for the base system and integrated third-party software. We also cherry-pick updated drivers and hardware support as needed.
  • Contributing is a way to build good will in the FreeBSD community as good community members. A $10,000 donation is acknowledged with our logo on the donor page (https://freebsdfoundation.org/donate/sponsors), and on a rotating basis on the home page. This is a great place to get out the [YOUR COMPANY NAME] name/logo.
  • FreeBSD has been gracious enough to include us in developer summits and vendor activities.

[If your company has donated in the past]

For several years, [YOUR COMPANY NAME] donated $XX,XXX. This year I would very much like to increase that donation to $YY,YYY.

or

I’d like to request that we donate $XX,XXXX to the Foundation this year and plan on making an annual donation going forwards.

Thanks,

[YOUR NAME HERE]

The Foundation is here to help you request a donation. If you have any questions or need further assistance, please email us.

Thank you for your continued support of the FreeBSD Project and Foundation!
